Unplugging

Unplugging

I’ve said it before, and I’m sure you have too. It would be so nice to unplug from your phone and social media every now and then. I honestly couldn’t tell you how many times a day I check my phone. The sad truth of the matter is; I’m doing it out of habit. Have you ever thought about it? I’m sure you are too!

I check my phone before I head to bed. I lie in bed for about 15- 20 minutes and unwind with my phone in my hand. I cruise Facebook, Instagram and The Chive, every day. I should be using this time to chat with my husband, read a book, write, or reflect on my day.

You know what the crazy thing is, though? I also check it in the morning?! Like seriously, what could have changed in that little amount of time, especially seeing as everyone else usually also sleeps during that period of time.

I watched this incredibly true and eye opening video today about the current millennial generation. It’s about 15 minutes in length, but HIGHLY recommended. You can watch it here

Something that really resonated with me from this clip was when he talked about people that are addicted to their phones. I’ve never considered myself addicted to my phone; I mean I’m not on it more than the next person. However, the video mentioned that if you look at your phone first thing in the morning, even before wishing your partner a good morning, you are in fact addicted. It’s implemented in your brain. That spoke so loudly to me and was a bit of a wakeup call.

It’s easy to make excuses, I have them too! I have two phones and one of them is for work, so I don’t really have the option to ignore it for too long. With that being said, you shouldn’t be expected to respond to people at every minute of the day, or within 10 minutes, every time! Some people rely on social media for work and promotion, but again, you don’t need to be connected to it 24/7.

When you are having social interactions in real life, don’t look at your phone. We all have a tendency to look at it, and it really is saying ‘you aren’t as important as the reason my phone is buzzing right now’. It hurts! Have you ever gone out for dinner with someone, only to have them stare at their phone? What about kids? They are making crafts, looking up for your approval, only to find you staring at your screen.

At the end of the day, it’s a choice.

What’s yours?
